Skagit Flats: July 21, 2001
Visit Slide Show

On July 20, 5 tandems and 5 singles met in LaConner for a long ride through the flatlands of the Skagit Valley. The day was nearly perfect for riding, not too hot or cool, plus it didn’t rain! Don and Carol Hayes had charted a great course for us, but sometime in the last two weeks, the county maintenance guys had decided to chip-seal many of the roads. So we decided to skip the long climbs on gravel, opting for a newly paved route into Sedro Wooley.

After lunch in Mount Vernon, some of us opted for a quick return to LaConner. The rest of us split into two groups, as 3 singles took off at a much higher pace. But, we regrouped often as they kept getting confused about the course and our paths would re-cross. Finally, after 60, 70, or 75 miles, depending on which roads you’d ridden, we all decided to head back to LaConner before the weather turned sour.

Back at the cars, we feasted on fresh watermelon (Thanks, Dennis!) and kettle corn before heading back to our homes. It was a great day of riding. You’ll notice from the pictures that Tom Hanks’ brother (Dammit) was on one of the singles. Actually, that was Mike, a carpenter, who’s only been riding for a month or so. Ah, to have young legs again!
