Goathead Run 2: September 28-29, 2002

Goathead Run 2 is now a terrific memory for those of us who attended. We had 25 bikes, about 8 more this year than last, but fewer singles. And while several teams had also attended last year, there were lots of new faces, including one couple that joined us on a loaned tandem. And even though they only rode on Saturday, they did come with us on Sunday, stopping at the wineries we did, and joined us for the catered salmon lunch at Silver Lake Winery.

We started a little tradition last year, by providing ride packets for the attendees. We were pretty proud of ourselves last year for thinking to provide everyone with a patch kit in their ride packet. After all, the Yakima area is well supplied with a very nasty thorn commonly known as a goathead. This year, however, we decided to try to prevent flat tires by putting a little item called a thornflicker in everyone’s packet. Made from leather, I’d have to say they were a good choice. We kept our flat tire score under 5 for both days, and even those weren’t all thorn-induced. Way to go!

What a beautiful weekend it was. The temperature was just right, and even though it rained Sunday morning early, by the time we hit the road, the sun was coming out. The wind came up Sunday afternoon, giving us all a little extra challenge. Mechanically, the only serious incident was a broken chain. Within 2 miles of the start on the first day, our volunteer mechanic Chris Kooser suffered a broken link. Because of his skill, knowledge, talent, and the fact that he was able to borrow tools from another team, he was back on the road in just a few minutes.

Ken Moller was back this year, acting as Wine Wagon, Sag Wagon, and general cheery support for us both days. And we had a new addition to our volunteer support team this year, Bill and Kay Gaines. After helping prepare the food right before the ride, the Gaines’s were in charge of Saturday’s lunch at Tefft Cellars, and they did a fine job (no easy task when you need to get to the lunch spot just before a widely distributed bunch of bikes show up…). Bill helped out with Sag Wagon duties after lunch on Saturday and all day Sunday. The Gaineses were able to join us at a few of the wineries, and of course were there for lunch on Sunday at Silver Lake.

Finally, last year, one of our club members was kind enough to provide a CD of photos to those people who attended the ride. Again, a new tradition has begun, and the riders this year are contributing their photos to a CD for Goathead Run 2, available to the attendees.

To everyone who attended, thank you for being there; we had a ball!
